About us
The Learning Community of Practice (ACA) is deployed by offering to all members and non-members of the African Curriculum Association (ACA) to engage in all matters related to the transformation of Education, especially on the curriculum and all its related matters, such as quality teaching, learning, assessment, technology innovation, etc.
ACA is a continental association dealing with curriculum matters on the African continent. The Association is a registered continental organization focusing on curriculum design & development, implementation, assessment, and technology innovation in different areas of education as its core mandate to improve the quality of education in Africa. The association’s Secretariat is based in Uganda and is housed at National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) Kyambogo.
In December 2018, ACA was designated by the African Union (AU) and member states in attendance, with the exclusive responsibility of coordinating the newly established African Union Continental Education Strategy for Education (CESA) Curriculum Cluster. The CESA curriculum cluster is chaired by African Union Commission (AUC), co-chaired by South Africa, and also Senegal is a member of this committee. The Continental Education Strategy for Education (CESA) cluster was established to ensure that continental curriculum issues are incorporated and equally addressed, similarly to other issues in different CESA thematic clusters at the African Union.
In implementing the CESA curriculum cluster agenda, the main role of ACA is to coordinate and support the alignment of education interventions that are brought to Africa towards the common African vision to ensure a more Afri-centric, quality, inclusive, balanced, relevant, responsive, and transformative curriculum to achieve an innovative and transformative education.
To achieve the African Union vision Agenda 2063, and the sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, we need to develop innovative and responsive curricula to stimulate and strengthen the work of curriculum development, research, and evaluation on the continent. ACA was mandated by the African Ministers of Education in their third specialized Science, Innovation & Technology technical meeting in 2019 to work with member states as they reform their curricula to ensure quality education. In this regard, ACA has just concluded a mapping study of the curriculum practices, policies, and products on the African continent to identify the gaps with the intention of harmonizing curriculum development. ACA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UNESCO- IBE to further strengthen education on the continent.
It is critical for Africa to imagine and develop curricula frameworks for Pre-primary, Primary, Secondary, and TVET to guide the continent as it transforms education, and produce highly qualified and competent African professionals that will take Africa we want to the highest height to compete with other nations across the globe.
